Katherine Elizabeth Wozniak has spent close to a decade deciphering the unspoken
needs of her interior design clients. So when a client was distressed about placing a
dog bed within her newly designed living room, she found yet another opportunity to
give her clients exactly what they need. Katherine believed that pet furniture should
compliment, not take away, from carefully designed interiors. Yet the furniture must
not only be beautiful, it must also be of tremendous value to the final customer – the
pets themselves.
With this in mind, Katherine spent several months studying the behaviors of her two
Maltese Bichons, Cody and Daisy. She observed the circling process that initiated their
decision to select a certain area to sleep; the unusual habit of burying the head and
body parts under pillows; and the on-their-back, spread-eagle position her dogs took
when they really wanted to get comfortable. These observations lead to an oval
design with high walls to allow pets to feel safe and secure; removable bolster
pillows for pets to bury under whenever they felt inclined; and an oversized
construction to give pets room to indulge whatever their preference in ultimate
relaxation.
Yet sleeping preferences alone wasn’t enough – the beds should also be easy to
clean and provide benefits to support a pet’s health. Feet were added to create a
slight elevation and keep away cold drafts. A front opening was necessary to make it
easier for pets with osteoarthritis, back pain and other disorders to get in and out of
the bed. For pets with allergies, pillows were made with 100% organic cotton covers
and hypoallergenic kapok fiber for filling, ensuring a soft lightweight pillow that is
water and moisture resistant, easy to clean and supportive of skeletal and muscular
conditions. Katherine chose a solid wooden frame to ensure the bed’s stability, and
added a handle to make carrying the beds easier. To ensure pets are never exposed
to toxic fumes, the frames were stained and painted with non-toxic products.
